The beginnings of the Department of Materials Technology and Chemistry date back to 1951, when the Department of Chemical Technology was established and Professor Józef Chrząszczewski was nominated as the head of the department. The professor headed the department for 10 years, until his retirement in 1961. The successor was Professor Mieczysław Wroński, who has been the head of the Department of Chemical Technology and Environmental Protection for 35 years (1961-1996). In 1996, Prof. dr hab. Stanisław Płaza was elected to the position of head, who held this position for the next 14 years. On October 1, 2010, two departments were separated from the Department of Chemical Technology and Environmental Protection: the Department of Materials Technology and Chemistry, headed by and still under the supervision of Prof. dr hab. Jarosław Grobelny, and the Department of Environmental Chemistry.

The Department conducts scientific and teaching activities based on its staff, including 4 associate professors, 2 research and teaching assistant professors, 2 research assistant professors, 1 senior lecturer and 1 administrative employee.

Since 2010, six habilitation procedures have been completed at the Department, in the following order: Jarosław Grobelny (2010), Grzegorz Celichowski (2011), Michał Cichomski (2013), Ireneusz Piwoński (2013), Maciej Psarski (2019) and Katarzyna Ranoszek-Soliwoda (2021).

In 2011, a new building was put into use at ul. Pomorska, thanks to which the Department's housing conditions have significantly improved. One of the most modern laboratories is located there - Microscopy for Physicochemical Research of Solids, officially opened in January 2014. The opening of the laboratory crowned work related to the implementation of a targeted subsidy in the field of large research infrastructure, awarded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in 2013.
